A collage is a type of artwork created by combining different materials, in order to create a new and unique composition.

The term "collage" was first used by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in 1912 to describe their mixed media artworks, which incorporated different materials and techniques such as painting and drawing. They were experimenting with new ways of creating art that broke away from traditional methods of representation.

Kurt Schwitters is considered the father of collages and created most of his works in the 1920s in Germany. Other famous artists were Max Ernst, Hannah Höch, Salvador Dali and others in the Surrealist movement.

In the 1950s and 1960s, artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns began to incorporate collage into their pop art and assemblage artworks. They used everyday objects and materials, such as newspapers and cardboard, to create their collages, blurring the boundaries between art and everyday life. In their mind, any piece of “junk” should be considered as a possible element of art.

Collages can be two-dimensional, such as a flat image on paper or canvas, or three-dimensional, such as a sculpture made from found objects.

Remember that a collage is a highly creative and personal form of expression, and there are no strict rules or guidelines. Experiment with different materials, colors, and textures, and allow your imagination to guide you. The end result will be a unique and visually striking piece of art that reflects your individual style and creativity.

Artworks often consist of a combination of collages and painting techniques.
